Cinematographers and Production Designers often make script rewrite suggestions to Directors. When you are considering making a rewrite suggestion to a director in order to do something creative story-wise with sound, obviously you should also consider who the director is, creatively. For example... Is it a director who seems at all open to creative suggestions in general? But it has been my experience, even on my earliest projects, that very few directors will disdainfully dismiss your idea if it is clear that you are trying to help make it a better movie. So I encourage you to be bold. Screenwriters rarely think very deeply or precisely about how to use sound or visuals. DP’s and Production Designers are not shy about suggesting rewrites for certain scenes. We shouldn’t be either. It’s one of the things we need to do to be taken seriously as collaborators.
